 komatsu opened the doors to its south harbor campus in milwaukee, wisconsin to hundreds of manufacturing workers for a policy panel featuring virginia govenor glenn youngkin, u.s. senator bill hagerty (r-tenn.), and u.s. representative bryan steil (r-wis.). the wide-ranging discussion explored the policies needed to secure the long-term growth and prosperity of the equipment manufacturing industry in america. 

 rod schrader, chairman and ceo of komatsu america corporation, kicked off the policy panel, noting that “with the right mix of policies, equipment manufacturers will be well positioned to do what they do best: grow their businesses, invest in their communities, and hire more americans.” 

 the policy panel, which was moderated by aem’s kip eideberg and kate fox wood, explored how to create a policy environment that allows equipment manufacturers to compete in the global economy and create jobs across the united states. 

 “when policymakers work to strengthen america’s global competitiveness, we get good policy. over the last eight years, the u.s. manufacturing sector has benefitted from transformative policies,” said kip eideberg, aem’ senior vice president of government and industry relation. “the challenge ahead of us is to maintain this momentum. equipment manufacturers still face persistent labor shortages, a regulatory onslaught, and inaction on key policy priorities that stifle growth.” 

 a big topic of the discussion was focused on the transformative power of the u.s. equipment manufacturing industry to improve the quality of life for americans, and the urgent need to advance a comprehensive policy agenda that allows equipment manufacturers to continue to invest in their communities, grow their businesses, and hire more americans. 

 “there is no magic wand, no silver bullet, no single policy. what we must do is create a competitive manufacturing ecosystem that is rooted in business-friendly policies, including regulatory reform, permitting reform, pro-growth tax provisions, a workforce, and talent pipeline that is second to none,” said governor youngkin. 

 the panelists also discussed how foreign direct investment strengthens u.s. equipment manufacturing and ensures that the future is made in america; stressed the need to retain a competitive tax system that allows companies to grow and innovate in the united states; and touched on the need to reduce the regulatory burden facing equipment manufacturers across the country. 

 “we are taking a hard look at regulatory compliance costs in states like virginia, tennessee, and wisconsin. we are creating environments that are conducive to business growth. the united states of america has great potential. we must recognize that, take advantage of it, and not do anything to disadvantage us. and with that mindset, we are going to move america forward to be the manufacturing giant of the next century,” said senator hagerty.

total u.s. agriculture tractor sales dropped 11.5% compared to may 2023, while combine sales dropped 17.7% compared to last year.   

“after the resilience of the last five years we’re starting to see softness in pockets of the market,” said aem senior vice president curt blades. “although the total year over year numbers show declines, subcategories of the market remain strong, particularly larger equipment.  the subcompact tractor market shows some year over year challenges following record highs during the pandemic.  we will continue to advocate for agriculture and rural america, with a focus on the swift passage of a robust farm bill, as it provides the certainty farmers need to make longer term capital investments in equipment.” 

canadian sales of 4-wheel-drive tractors also increased year-to-date in may, with an uptick of 5.7%, but fell 7.5% compared to may 2023. total canadian sales of combines jumped 58.4% compared to may 2023, and are up 23.8% year-to-date. total canadian agriculture tractor sales are down 10.7% compared to last year and dropped 14.5% year-to-date.

the precise act would also incentivize private sector financing of precision agriculture equipment through the conservation loan guarantee program and the business and industry loan guarantee program and fund 100% of precision agriculture projects through joint participation of conservation cost-share programs and the conservation loan program.

year-to-date data, however, reflects sales are below 2023 in total units of ag tractors and combines. ag tractor sales dipped 14.2%, while combines finished under 18.9%.  

in canada, combine sales jumped 27.2% in february 2024 compared to 2023, and are up a total of 6.3% year-to-date compared to last year. a total of 131 combines were sold in february, adding to the overall year-to-date sales of 255 units.  

“the combine sales in canada are a bright spot when we take a deeper look at february’s performance,” said aem senior vice president curt blades. “the uptick in sales of 100+ horsepower ag tractors in the u.s. also bodes well for the long-term strength of our industry moving forward.”

in the u.s., january data shows 4-wheel-drive tractors increased year-over-year 1.4 percent, the only segment to show growth in the month. in canada, 4-wheel-drive tractor sales remained unchanged at 49 units in january compared to 2023.

“this slight gain in u.s. 4-wheel-drive tractors is positive news as 2024 kicks off,” said aem senior vice president curt blades. “while overall sales fell in both the u.s. and canada compared to january 2023 sales, we remain optimistic about future long-term growth.”  

overall unit sales of u.s. tractors are down 21.2 percent compared to january 2023 sales, while combine sales finished 4.9 percent under. canadian tractor sales finished 29.9 percent under 2023’s data. combines were also down in january, falling 9.5 percent.

combine harvester sales closed out the year ahead of 2022 levels, while almost all tractor segments saw declines in both the united states and canada, according to the latest data from the 卡塔尔vs塞内加尔竞猜 (aem).

total u.s. farm tractor sales fell 5.1 percent in december compared to 2022, while year-to-date sales came in 8.7 percent lower than a year ago. however, 100+hp tractors grew 5.2 percent for the year and 3.6 percent in december, while combine harvesters finished 2023 with sales up 1.7 percent last month. the sub-40hp segment led losses for the year as a whole, falling 10.7 percent for calendar 2023 on the heels of a 5.8 percent drop in december.

for canada, 4wd farm tractor sales jumped 64.9 percent in december and finished the year up 44.4 percent overall. overall unit tractor sales finished 2023 down 14 percent for the month of december and 10.7 percent overall. all tractor segments other than 4wd units experienced double-digit declines in december, but combine harvesters did close out the year with ytd gains of 5.5 percent.

in the u.s., the november data shows that 4-wheel-drive tractors grew year-over-year 72.6 percent, the only segment to see growth for the month. year-to-date, 4-wheel-drive tractor sales are up 38.2 percent, leading all segments in unit sales growth. in canada, 4-wheel-drive unit sales were up 84.8 percent for the month, and 41.5 percent year-to-date.

akio takeuchi, the visionary behind takeuchi manufacturing, and susanne cobey, the driving force as ceo of eagle crusher. both are credited with spearheading innovative product segments.

unit sales of 4wd ag tractors continued growing in both the u.s. and canada in october, making a strong opening of the final quarter of 2023,  according to the

in the u.s., 4wd tractors grew year-over-year 12.6 percent, the only segment to see growth for the month. year-to-date, 4wd tractor sales are up 36.2 percent, leading all segments in unit sales growth. in canada, 4wd unit sales were up 141 percent for the month, and 38.3 percent year-to-date.

in the u.s., 100+hp 2wd tractors, and 4wd tractors grew year-over-year. both segments, along with self-propelled combines remain positive for the year. the biggest overall growth among tractors happened in 4wd units, growing more than 113 percent in september. in canada, 4wd sales finished the month in a similar position, up more than 91 percent.

self-propelled combine sales continued to increase in the u.s., while total farm tractor unit sales in the u.s. and canada declined in july, according to the

overall unit sales of u.s. combines climbed 10.6 percent compared to july 2022, while sales of tractors declined 5.2 percent in the same month in 2022, driven largely by softness in the smaller horsepower segment. canadian tractors saw slower july sales with an overall decline approaching 20 percent, with combines declining 16 percent year over year for the month of july.

total farm tractor unit sales in the u.s. turned positive for the first time in 2023, led by continued strength in large tractors and combines according to the latest data from the 卡塔尔vs塞内加尔竞猜 (aem).

gains in the u.s. market were led by 100+hp 2wd units, up 25.4 percent, closely followed by 4wd units up 21.9 percent. however, a change from the previous month is a small gain in the sub-40hp 2wd segment, up 0.2 percent, that took overall sales positive since they represent more than 66 percent of total unit sales volume for the month. u.s. self-propelled combines also marked another large gain of 9.8 percent. at the mid-year mark, year-to-date unit sales of farm tractors are down 9.7 percent despite a gain of 45.5 percent in the 4wd segment over that same period, and combines are up 51.5 percent.

in canada, combine harvesters were one of only two segments to report positive results, up 27.5 percent for the month, joined by 100+hp 2wd tractors up 15.7 percent. total unit sales in tractors finished the month down 15.4 percent due to losses in all other segments, including 4wd units which had been a point of strength all year, but are down 18.5 percent this month. with half of the year done, total farm tractor unit sales year-to-date in canada are down 14.4 percent, while combines are up 81.8 percent.

overall u.s. ag tractor unit sales gained in all but one segment. u.s. self-propelled combine sales grew the most, up 54.6 percent, with 4wd tractors (up 51.1 percent) and 100+hp 2wd units (up 9.8 percent). however, a 2.7 percent decline in the sub-40 hp segment resulted in a 0.7 percent reduction in total farm tractors. total farm tractor sales in the u.s. for the year are down 12.2 percent versus 2022, while combines are up 68.3 percent.

in canada, combine harvesters were the biggest growth spot as well, up 68.3 percent for the month, and 107.7 percent for the year. total unit sales in tractors finished the month down 11.3 percent due to losses in the sub-40 hp and 40-100hp segments, down 14.7 and 13.1 percent respectively. all other tractor segments were positive for the month, with 4wd units leading the way again with 26.6 percent growth. year to date, tractors in canada are down 14.1 percent.

“the aem hall of fame is a collection of some of the most impactful innovators in the equipment manufacturing industry, and in many cases, our world,” said aem president megan tanel. “in fact, several of these leaders have created the ground-breaking equipment and technologies that have touched the lives of so many across the globe, contributing to how we live, work and eat.”

among its members are individuals who have not only changed the way the equipment manufacturing industry works, but the way the world itself works. the advances these individuals created made possible everything from the gps navigation in your phone to the sandwich in your lunchbox.

bryn fosburgh (inducted 2022) | trimble, inc. | real-time kinematic (rtk) gps technology

before global positioning systems (gps) incorporated rtk technology, using gps to figure out where something was on the surface of the earth took a backpack, a receiver that often resembled half a softball on top of a large walking stick, some patience and the ability to compensate for it’s ability to only calculate position within five meters (yards), though later iterations were able to condense that to thirty centimeters (approximately one foot).

rtk technology, however, allowed receivers, now significantly miniaturized, to track position of a receiver in real time within one centimeter (less than half an inch). with this advancement, gps was able to surpass its original design of tracking large military assets like aircraft carriers, to allowing a tractor to precisely plant a field on its own, allow a road grader to accurately grade a new road curve or even guide a person accurately to their favorite sandwich shop.

one of the reasons sandwiches have remained in such ready supply worldwide has to do with the next aem hall of fame member, john deere, who opened up “america’s breadbasket.”

when deere first moved from his home state of vermont to his adopted home of illinois in the 1830s, the grasslands of the american midwest frustrated farming efforts, as the native grasses’ deep root systems created sticky, difficult fields to work compared to the looser, forest-based soils then-new european settlers were used to. every few feet, farmers would have to clear off the mud from their wooden or cast-iron plows before proceeding.

deere started tinkering with a scottish saw blade made out of harder, smoother steel in 1837. the smoother steel surface, combined with the sharper angle deere perfected, allowed his new plows to cut the prairie sod, and allow for the use of some of the most fertile, productive soil in the world.  

eventually, deere’s plows would be known as “the plow that broke the plains,” and create america’s breadbasket in the midwest.

william smith otis (inducted 1996) | steam shovel

deere isn’t the only one famous for breaking literal ground. william smith otis only lived to be 26 years old, but in his short life, his invention of the steam shovel started transforming the world by allowing for faster 2022世界杯亚洲区赛程表时间 of railroads, canals, and other forms of infrastructure we take for granted today.

otis’s design was intended to mimic the same action of a human using a shovel, in which it would excavate a bucket of earth, turn up to 180 degrees, dump it into a receptacle (such as a railcar), then return to position. otis’s shovel was mounted on a rail platform, powered by a steam engine, and used chains to control the bucket.

otis was granted a u.s. patent (no. 1,089) in 1836, but tragically died less than three years later of typhoid fever.

cyril & louis keller (inducted 1999) | melroe manufacturing/bobcat | skid-steer loader

while otis’s steam shovel loaded dirt, brothers cyril and louis keller got their big break loading turkey waste more than a century later. in 1957, the brothers were tasked by their turkey-farming friend in minnesota to help him mechanize the process of clearing the manure out of his large barn. what would result from that challenge, a compact front-end loader that could turn fully around within its own footprint, would create one of the most versatile machines introduced to the jobsite and barnyard since the gasoline-powered tractor.

after the concept was purchased by melroe manufacturing of north dakota, the keller brothers were hired to continue developing their three-wheeled concept. it was at melroe where the kellers added the fourth wheel and the skid-steering mechanism, allowing the machine to turn with differential steering like a military tank, and gain a significant stability boost from the extra wheel, resulting in the first zero-turn skid-steer, the melroe m-400. eventually, the concept of a compact loader would develop into the track-loader by replacing the wheels with tracks, giving the machine even greater ability to do work.

benjamin holt (inducted 1993) | holt manufacturing/caterpillar | track-type tractor

those first working tracks come courtesy of benjamin holt, who patented the first workable continuous-tracked tractor at his shop in stockton, calif.

a year after seeing a number of non-functional concepts on a trip to england, holt developed his own ideas and tapped his company’s metallurgical knowledge to produce a working crawler-tractor concept in 1904.

as the story goes, while holt was testing his steam-powered “no. 77” prototype by plowing the marshy soil of roberts island, near sacramento, calif., his company photographer remarked the upside-down image of the machine in his viewfinder resembled a “caterpillar.” from that day, the machine, and name, were born. holt’s first steam-powered crawler tractors sold in 1904 for $5,500 (the equivalent of more than $192,000 in 2023), however, the concept really broke through when his nephew, pliny holt, started creating gasoline engines for them in 1908.

total u.s. ag tractor unit sales decreased in april 2023, down 16 percent year-over-year, with unit sales increasing in the 4wd farm tractor segment (up 54.1 percent) and in the +100hp tractor sales segment (up 5 percent).  u.s. self-propelled combine sales grew 23.1 percent for the month, leading to the year-to-date gain of 71.9 percent. sales decreased in both the sub-40hp segment (down 20.1 percent) and the 40-100hp segment (down 13.7 percent) for the month of april.  

in canada, combine harvesters continue to increase, up 50.9 percent for the month, and 132.5 percent year-to-date. total unit sales in tractors finished the month down 25.5 percent due to continued losses in all tractor segments, the sub-40 hp (down 34.4%), the 40-100hp segments (down 5.2 percent), and the 100+hp segment (down 24.9 percent).  sales of 4wd farm tractors increased 36.6 percent, with a year-to-date gain of 52 percent.

“in april we saw an increase in sales of the 100+hp farm tractors, but a decline in both the smaller tractor units, which is likely due to sub-compact market decline, which represents a large volume of units and had record sales in 2020 through 2022,” said curt blades, senior vice president, industry sectors and product leadership at the 卡塔尔vs塞内加尔竞猜 . “and because commodity markets for agriculture products remain strong, we continue to see increases in sales of the larger, more expensive segments of 4wd tractors and self-propelled harvesters.”

in 2014, aem inducted its first hispanic individual in agustin “gus” ramirez, chairman of husco international. ramirez’s hydraulic innovations, along with his legacy of advancing education hydraulic research and technology (most notably with his funding of the “agustin a. ramirez/husco international distinguished chair” position at the georgia institute of technology) and the ramirez family foundation’s funding of scholarships for both exceptional minority students and children of husco employees.

“when i bought husco, one of the things i said to each of our staff and each of the new members of our company was, ‘we will use husco’s success to make the world better,” said ramirez at his induction ceremony. “that’s something we live as a family, and something we live as a company.”

in 2019, aem welcomed the first women into the hall of fame in vermeer’s mary andringa. andringa was recognized for her leadership in implementing lean manufacturing processes at vermeer. having started her career as an elementary school teacher, andringa, like ramirez, made education a focus of her activities as well.

with nominations for 2023 open, the aem hall of fame is hoping to add another groundbreaker to its ranks.
