roy applequist founder and former president and ceo, great plains manufacturing, inc. 

roy applequist founded great plains manufacturing, inc. (gpm), a company renowned for its innovative, high-quality agricultural equipment. what started out as a small operation in salina, kansas, has grown into a multi-million-dollar company with facilities in eight kansas communities, over 2,300 employees, and global product distribution. 

applequist started the business in 1976 after interviewing 100 farmers about their equipment needs. this led young applequist to introduce the first 30-ft. folding no-till drill that could be transported full of seed. from its humble beginnings, gpm quickly grew into a major player in the agriculture sector, thanks to applequist’s commitment to engineering excellence, ingenuity, and customer service. 

under applequist’s leadership, the company expanded to include no-till and min-till drills, tillage equipment, and precision planters. his strategic and innovative vision helped gpm remain competitive in a demanding agricultural market. 

with a challenging ag market in the mid-1980s came a need to diversify. in 1986, applequist founded land pride, which became a leading manufacturer of grounds maintenance and dirt-working tools and attachments. in 2007, applequist established a strategic alliance with kubota corporation, building implements for tractors – significantly expanding the land pride network. applequist also diversified, creating trucking and international divisions. 

in 2016, gpm was acquired by kubota corporation, though applequist’s legacy of quality, customer focus, and innovation continue to play a role in the company’s success. with a lifetime of manufacturing experience, applequist established applequist manufacturing, inc. in 2018, where he continues to pursue his entrepreneurial passion.  

al mcquinn founder and former ceo and chairman, ag-chem equipment, inc.   

al mcquinn was born on a farm near butler, missouri during the great depression. after earning a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the university of missouri in 1954, he served in the army until 1957. 

mcquinn’s career in agriculture began with selling fertilizer, which sparked his interest in improving agricultural equipment. he went to work for federal chemical company, which sold row crop sprayers. he found these sprayers and others like them didn't do a very good job of applying product. the solubles in the product would often settle in the solution, which led to inconsistent, watered-down applications and unhappy customers. 

mcquinn set out to find a "solution for his solution". from a garage in jackson, minnesota, he developed a sparger agitator, a device that recirculates liquid product to keep the solubles suspended in their solution until they are applied. this led to his creation of ag-chem equipment co., inc. in 1963. 

under his leadership, ag-chem grew into a nasdaq-listed company with over $300 million in annual revenues and 1,700 employees. he was also a pioneer in precision agriculture, integrating gps technology, gis software, and variable rate application systems to optimize crop yields. mcquinn’s contributions earned him seven patents and a lasting legacy in the agricultural industry. 

after selling his company to agco corporation in 2000, al mcquinn focused his talents on operating an investment company he founded. he and his wife, mary agnes, dedicated much of their energy and resources to their philanthropic work, supporting multiple institutions including the mayo clinic, minneapolis institute of arts, university of st. thomas, benilde-st. margaret school, the university of missouri, and the minnesota landscape arboretum. 

sadly, al passed away on october 23, 2024. his longtime associate, john retherford, accepted the award on behalf of his family.

canadian sales of 4-wheel-drive tractors increased 29.4% in august 2024 compared to 2023, and are up 18.1% year-to-date. total canadian ag tractor sales fell 26.1% compared to last year, while total combine sales dropped 36.5%.

total sales of ag tractors dropped 14.1% in july compared to the year before and are down 11.9% year-to-date. combine sales dipped 19.1% in july compared to 2023 and are down 17.6% year-to-date.  

“july’s uptick in 4-wheel-drive ag tractors is a bright spot after a slowdown of sales in june and may of 2024,” said aem senior vice president curt blades. “however, we are still seeing softness across the subcompact tractor market after years of strong sales. we know the challenges facing the market are complex. this is why aem is focused on advocating for the swift passage of a farm bill to provide the certainty farmers need to make these purchases.” 

in canada, july sales of 4-wheel-drive increase 88.7% compared to 2023, and are up 17% year-to-date. overall, canadian sales of ag tractors dropped 13% in july compared to the year before and are down 15.5% year-to-date.

 komatsu opened the doors to its south harbor campus in milwaukee, wisconsin to hundreds of manufacturing workers for a policy panel featuring virginia govenor glenn youngkin, u.s. senator bill hagerty (r-tenn.), and u.s. representative bryan steil (r-wis.). the wide-ranging discussion explored the policies needed to secure the long-term growth and prosperity of the equipment manufacturing industry in america. 

 rod schrader, chairman and ceo of komatsu america corporation, kicked off the policy panel, noting that “with the right mix of policies, equipment manufacturers will be well positioned to do what they do best: grow their businesses, invest in their communities, and hire more americans.” 

 the policy panel, which was moderated by aem’s kip eideberg and kate fox wood, explored how to create a policy environment that allows equipment manufacturers to compete in the global economy and create jobs across the united states. 

 “when policymakers work to strengthen america’s global competitiveness, we get good policy. over the last eight years, the u.s. manufacturing sector has benefitted from transformative policies,” said kip eideberg, aem’ senior vice president of government and industry relation. “the challenge ahead of us is to maintain this momentum. equipment manufacturers still face persistent labor shortages, a regulatory onslaught, and inaction on key policy priorities that stifle growth.” 

 a big topic of the discussion was focused on the transformative power of the u.s. equipment manufacturing industry to improve the quality of life for americans, and the urgent need to advance a comprehensive policy agenda that allows equipment manufacturers to continue to invest in their communities, grow their businesses, and hire more americans. 

 “there is no magic wand, no silver bullet, no single policy. what we must do is create a competitive manufacturing ecosystem that is rooted in business-friendly policies, including regulatory reform, permitting reform, pro-growth tax provisions, a workforce, and talent pipeline that is second to none,” said governor youngkin. 

 the panelists also discussed how foreign direct investment strengthens u.s. equipment manufacturing and ensures that the future is made in america; stressed the need to retain a competitive tax system that allows companies to grow and innovate in the united states; and touched on the need to reduce the regulatory burden facing equipment manufacturers across the country. 

 “we are taking a hard look at regulatory compliance costs in states like virginia, tennessee, and wisconsin. we are creating environments that are conducive to business growth. the united states of america has great potential. we must recognize that, take advantage of it, and not do anything to disadvantage us. and with that mindset, we are going to move america forward to be the manufacturing giant of the next century,” said senator hagerty. 

 on the topic of strengthening america’s position as a manufacturing powerhouse, the panelists all agreed that the united states needs to remain committed to expanding rules-based trade and investment to make it easier for u.s. equipment manufacturers to compete in the global economy and sell their products to customers around the world. 

 “there is a lot of equipment produced here in the united states, and especially in the state of wisconsin, that is shipped to customers around the world. that is terrific for our economy. but we must also recognize that we have had trade agreements that have been done not to the benefit of american workers, and we need to ensure that any future deals are free, fair, and reciprocal,” noted representative steil.

total u.s. agriculture tractor sales dropped 11.5% compared to may 2023, while combine sales dropped 17.7% compared to last year.   

“after the resilience of the last five years we’re starting to see softness in pockets of the market,” said aem senior vice president curt blades. “although the total year over year numbers show declines, subcategories of the market remain strong, particularly larger equipment.  the subcompact tractor market shows some year over year challenges following record highs during the pandemic.  we will continue to advocate for agriculture and rural america, with a focus on the swift passage of a robust farm bill, as it provides the certainty farmers need to make longer term capital investments in equipment.” 

canadian sales of 4-wheel-drive tractors also increased year-to-date in may, with an uptick of 5.7%, but fell 7.5% compared to may 2023. total canadian sales of combines jumped 58.4% compared to may 2023, and are up 23.8% year-to-date. total canadian agriculture tractor sales are down 10.7% compared to last year and dropped 14.5% year-to-date.

according to the report, in 2023, the u.s. industrial bioeconomy supported nearly 644,000 domestic jobs, contributed $210 billion to the u.s. gdp, and drove $49 billion in wages. in terms of total economic output, the top five states were illinois, iowa, california, nebraska, and minnesota. other states, georgia and ohio, broke into the top five when looking specifically at direct and total employment, respectively.

the report also found that the average industrial bioeconomy worker took home $133,600 in annual compensation and that each direct job in the sector generates or supports more than 11 additional jobs through indirect means, such as the purchase of raw materials, including agricultural commodities, and other inputs.
  
“relative to other industrial sectors, the extended domestic supply chain of the u.s. industrial bioeconomy generates outsized secondary economic benefits,” wrote the authors. “this is especially true of domestic employment, where each direct job supports 11.08 additional indirect and induced jobs (total employment multiplier of 12.08). for comparison, the employment multiplier for the sector that includes solar photovoltaics is 6.50 and the multiplier for the sector that includes wind turbines is 3.73.”

the pal act would create a program within the u.s. department of agriculture (usda) to provide loan financing to farmers and ranchers interested in purchasing precision agriculture equipment, while the precise act would provide a suite of financial tools to help farmers and ranchers of all sizes increase their adoption of precision ag technologies through existing usda conservation programs. 

the precise act would also incentivize private sector financing of precision agriculture equipment through the conservation loan guarantee program and the business and industry loan guarantee program and fund 100% of precision agriculture projects through joint participation of conservation cost-share programs and the conservation loan program.

in canada, combine sales jumped 27.2% in february 2024 compared to 2023, and are up a total of 6.3% year-to-date compared to last year. a total of 131 combines were sold in february, adding to the overall year-to-date sales of 255 units.  

“the combine sales in canada are a bright spot when we take a deeper look at february’s performance,” said aem senior vice president curt blades. “the uptick in sales of 100+ horsepower ag tractors in the u.s. also bodes well for the long-term strength of our industry moving forward.”

in the u.s., january data shows 4-wheel-drive tractors increased year-over-year 1.4 percent, the only segment to show growth in the month. in canada, 4-wheel-drive tractor sales remained unchanged at 49 units in january compared to 2023.

“this slight gain in u.s. 4-wheel-drive tractors is positive news as 2024 kicks off,” said aem senior vice president curt blades. “while overall sales fell in both the u.s. and canada compared to january 2023 sales, we remain optimistic about future long-term growth.”  

overall unit sales of u.s. tractors are down 21.2 percent compared to january 2023 sales, while combine sales finished 4.9 percent under. canadian tractor sales finished 29.9 percent under 2023’s data. combines were also down in january, falling 9.5 percent.

combine harvester sales closed out the year ahead of 2022 levels, while almost all tractor segments saw declines in both the united states and canada, according to the latest data from the 卡塔尔vs塞内加尔竞猜 (aem).

total u.s. farm tractor sales fell 5.1 percent in december compared to 2022, while year-to-date sales came in 8.7 percent lower than a year ago. however, 100+hp tractors grew 5.2 percent for the year and 3.6 percent in december, while combine harvesters finished 2023 with sales up 1.7 percent last month. the sub-40hp segment led losses for the year as a whole, falling 10.7 percent for calendar 2023 on the heels of a 5.8 percent drop in december.

for canada, 4wd farm tractor sales jumped 64.9 percent in december and finished the year up 44.4 percent overall. overall unit tractor sales finished 2023 down 14 percent for the month of december and 10.7 percent overall. all tractor segments other than 4wd units experienced double-digit declines in december, but combine harvesters did close out the year with ytd gains of 5.5 percent.

“seeing year-over-year gains in u.s. sales of both combine harvesters and 100+hp tractors is a welcome sight as 2024 gets underway,” said aem senior vice president curt blades. “and while several tractor segments fell last month versus 2023, we’re still confident in the strength of the equipment market and remain optimistic about its long-term growth.”

unit sales of 4-wheel-drive agriculture tractors grew in both the u.s. and canada in november, continuing a strong final quarter of 2023, according to the latest data from the 卡塔尔vs塞内加尔竞猜 (aem).

in the u.s., the november data shows that 4-wheel-drive tractors grew year-over-year 72.6 percent, the only segment to see growth for the month. year-to-date, 4-wheel-drive tractor sales are up 38.2 percent, leading all segments in unit sales growth. in canada, 4-wheel-drive unit sales were up 84.8 percent for the month, and 41.5 percent year-to-date.

akio takeuchi (1933-) founder, takeuchi manufacturing

susanne cobey joined eagle crusher company, inc. in 1974 as parts manager, and quickly advanced through multiple ranks to become president and ceo in 1990.

unit sales of 4wd ag tractors continued growing in both the u.s. and canada in october, making a strong opening of the final quarter of 2023,  according to the

in the u.s., 4wd tractors grew year-over-year 12.6 percent, the only segment to see growth for the month. year-to-date, 4wd tractor sales are up 36.2 percent, leading all segments in unit sales growth. in canada, 4wd unit sales were up 141 percent for the month, and 38.3 percent year-to-date.

self-propelled combine sales continued to increase in the u.s., while total farm tractor unit sales in the u.s. and canada declined in july, according to the

overall unit sales of u.s. combines climbed 10.6 percent compared to july 2022, while sales of tractors declined 5.2 percent in the same month in 2022, driven largely by softness in the smaller horsepower segment. canadian tractors saw slower july sales with an overall decline approaching 20 percent, with combines declining 16 percent year over year for the month of july. 

“we’re still seeing moderate growth in the traditional ag market that has shown a steady rise all year in north america” said curt blades, senior vice president, at the 卡塔尔vs塞内加尔竞猜 . “the softness in the compact and sub-compact tractor market in both the u.s. and canada is something we have been experiencing for some time after record growth in the segment during the recent pandemic.”

in the u.s., 100+hp 2wd tractors, 4wd tractors and combines were the only segments to grow year over year, the same segments that have been positive year to date. the biggest overall growth among tractors was 4wd units, growing just over 1 percent for the month.

in canada, every segment declined, with the 40-100hp 2wd segment leading losses, at more than 24 percent. despite the decline in comparative july sales, year-to-date tractor and combine sales continue to show strength in larger ag specific equipment like row crop tractors, 4wd tractors as well as self-propelled combines.

so far this year, tractors are down more than 9 percent in the u.s., while combines are up 41.2 percent. canadian tractor unit sales are down more than 15 percent, with combines up 48.2 percent.

in a recent survey conducted by aem, nearly 98 percent of equipment manufacturers reported that they were still experiencing supply chain problems, partly due to the shortages and supply chain disruptions caused by the global covid-19 pandemic. more than three years later, equipment manufacturers continue to advocate for policies that will strengthen and safeguard supply chains, bolster american manufacturing, and level the playing field for american companies competing in overseas markets.

total farm tractor unit sales in the u.s. turned positive for the first time in 2023, led by continued strength in large tractors and combines according to the latest data from the 卡塔尔vs塞内加尔竞猜 (aem).

gains in the u.s. market were led by 100+hp 2wd units, up 25.4 percent, closely followed by 4wd units up 21.9 percent. however, a change from the previous month is a small gain in the sub-40hp 2wd segment, up 0.2 percent, that took overall sales positive since they represent more than 66 percent of total unit sales volume for the month. u.s. self-propelled combines also marked another large gain of 9.8 percent. at the mid-year mark, year-to-date unit sales of farm tractors are down 9.7 percent despite a gain of 45.5 percent in the 4wd segment over that same period, and combines are up 51.5 percent.

in canada, combine harvesters were one of only two segments to report positive results, up 27.5 percent for the month, joined by 100+hp 2wd tractors up 15.7 percent. total unit sales in tractors finished the month down 15.4 percent due to losses in all other segments, including 4wd units which had been a point of strength all year, but are down 18.5 percent this month. with half of the year done, total farm tractor unit sales year-to-date in canada are down 14.4 percent, while combines are up 81.8 percent.

“year-over-year sales comparisons this month are now starting to compare to 2022 sales that were closer to the 5-year average, and less informed by the aftereffects of the pandemic,” said curt blades, senior vice president, industry sectors and product leadership at the 卡塔尔vs塞内加尔竞猜 . “at the same time, the continued strength in larger tractors and combines still owes some to the strength of commodities markets, and the appeal of more efficient technologies available on modern equipment.”

four-wheel-drive tractors and combine harvesters continue growth while some other segments continue declines according to the latest data from the 卡塔尔vs塞内加尔竞猜 (aem).

overall u.s. ag tractor unit sales gained in all but one segment. u.s. self-propelled combine sales grew the most, up 54.6 percent, with 4wd tractors (up 51.1 percent) and 100+hp 2wd units (up 9.8 percent). however, a 2.7 percent decline in the sub-40 hp segment resulted in a 0.7 percent reduction in total farm tractors. total farm tractor sales in the u.s. for the year are down 12.2 percent versus 2022, while combines are up 68.3 percent.

in canada, combine harvesters were the biggest growth spot as well, up 68.3 percent for the month, and 107.7 percent for the year. total unit sales in tractors finished the month down 11.3 percent due to losses in the sub-40 hp and 40-100hp segments, down 14.7 and 13.1 percent respectively. all other tractor segments were positive for the month, with 4wd units leading the way again with 26.6 percent growth. year to date, tractors in canada are down 14.1 percent.

“the trends seen here are still being informed by the pandemic-driven highs in past years, especially in the sub-40 horsepower segment that, this month, makes up nearly seventy percent of total unit sales volume in ag tractors,” said curt blades, senior vice president, industry sectors and product leadership at the 卡塔尔vs塞内加尔竞猜 . “the continued growth in bigger units and harvesters indicate two trends. first, farmers see enough improvement in the technology to make a clear business case for this investment, and second, they feel confident that positive commodity prices will continue, allowing them to afford the expense.”

the fy2024 budget, which included the funding to create the dairy innovation fund, was signed by governor reynolds on june 1. the program will make available new technologies and equipment to iowa’s dairy farmers through low interest loans and grants. with the help of the dairy innovation fund, dairy farmers will be able to access critical financial resources that can lead to cost improvements and increased efficiency through the usage of modern dairy technology. aem helped secure passage of the legislation through a comprehensive advocacy campaign, including meetings with lawmakers and an earned media campaign. chad huyser, president of lely north america and member of aem’s dairy leadership group, authored an op-ed in the oskaloosa herald calling for the bill’s passage.
